AlwaysOn Architecture Guide: Building a High Availability and Disaster Recovery Solution by Using AlwaysOn Availability Groups

Resource - Sun 19 Aug 2012 00:00

SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups provides a unified high availability and disaster recovery (HADR) solution that improves upon legacy functionality previously found across disparate features. Prior to SQL Server 2012, several customers used database mirroring to provide local high availability within a data center, and log shipping for disaster recovery across a remote data center. With SQL Server 2012, this common design pattern can be replaced with an architecture that uses availability groups for both high availability and disaster recovery. This paper details the key topology requirements of this specific design pattern, including quorum configuration considerations, steps required to build the environment, and a workflow that shows how to handle a disaster recovery event in the new topology.

Replication Enhancement – Improved Distribution Database Cleanup

SQL News - Mon 30 Apr 2018 12:44

Replication Distribution database is the perhaps the most important entity in the entire replication topology. Apart from storing the replication metadata and history for replication agents, the distribution database, in case of transactional replication, also provides intermediate storage for the transactions and commands that will be shipped to the subscribers. These transactions and commands stored in the MSRepl_Transactions and MSRepl_Commands tables. In a transactional replication topology which involves a highly active Publisher (and Publication database), i.e. a publisher with high numbers of transactions/second, the MSRepl_Commands and MSRepl_Transactions tables on the distribution database can grow substantially large.

AlwaysOn Solution Guide: Offloading Read-Only Workloads to Secondary Replicas

Resource - Sun 19 Aug 2012 00:00

In Microsoft SQL Server 2012, the AlwaysOn Availability Groups technology can address a common requirement of your existing high availability solution: utilization of secondary servers to result in high ROI of the investment in hardware. With AlwaysOn Availability Groups, these otherwise inactive secondary servers can be utilized as readable secondary replicas. This feature enables you to optimize your hardware utilization, thus achieving higher ROI for your hardware. Furthermore, it can help you to improve performance on the primary system by offloading your read-only workload to readable secondary replicas. This white paper describes how to configure AlwaysOn Availability Groups for offloading reporting workload to a secondary replica. It also describes the factors that can affect the high availability and the performance of your reporting workload.

How to Increase SQL Availability and Performance Using Window Server 2012 SMB 3.0 Solutions

Blog Post - Sun 16 Dec 2012 00:00

AlwaysOn Architecture Guide: Building a HA and DR Solution by Using FC Instances and Availability Groups

Resource - Sun 19 Aug 2012 00:00

SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances (FCI) and AlwaysOn Availability Groups provide a comprehensive high availability and disaster recovery solution. Prior to SQL Server 2012, many customers used FCIs to provide local high availability within a data center and database mirroring for disaster recovery to a remote data center. With SQL Server 2012, this design pattern can be replaced with an architecture that uses FCIs for high availability and availability groups for disaster recovery business requirements. Availability groups leverage Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) functionality and enable multiple features not available in database mirroring. This paper details the key topology requirements of this specific design pattern, including asymmetric storage considerations, quorum model selection, quorum votes, steps required to build the environment, and a workflow illustrating how to handle a disaster recovery event in the new topology across participating job roles.

Resource - Sun 19 Aug 2012 00:00

This migration guide provides guidance for customers who have deployed database mirroring for local high availability and log shipping for disaster recovery based on SQL Server 2008 R2 or earlier and now want to upgrade to use SQL Server 2012 AlwaysOn Availability Groups. The migration sequence presented here is a best-practice approach that preserves the high availability and disaster recovery capabilities of your databases during most of the migration process. This guide is Part I of a two-part series that describes planning considerations and deployment of a complete migration scenario. The information in this Migration Guide series can help you to successfully move to a high availability and disaster recovery (HADR) solution based on AlwaysOn Availability Groups.
